Giveaway

The Native American custom of giving gifts to others to honour them.

Also: honour dance

A giveaway is a ceremony, common at powwows, memorials and family celebrations among Native American nations, in which the host or family gives gifts such as blankets, shawls, food and household goods to guests, as a way of honouring them and giving thanks. Rather than receiving gifts on a birthday or after a success, the person honoured gives to others. It reflects values of generosity and sharing. The gifts are presented along with a few words, and the receiver may be asked to come forward. Giveaways follow a death, a naming, a graduation or a return home, and are a lived expression of reciprocity.
