Also: pow wow, wacipi

A powwow is a gathering of Native American and First Nations peoples for dancing, singing, drumming, food, crafts and meeting friends. It opens with a grand entry in which dancers in regalia enter the arena behind flags and honour veterans. Dance styles include the traditional, fancy, grass, jingle and men's fancy dance, and drum groups sing as they play on a large drum. Competitions give prizes, but the heart is fellowship. Powwows are held across the year, from small local events to large ones such as the Gathering of Nations in New Mexico. Visitors are welcome, but should ask before photographing a dancer or an item of regalia.

Region: North America
