Hanami
Gathering under blossoming trees to enjoy the flowers and the season.
Also: cherry blossom viewing
Hanami means flower viewing, and in Japan it means gathering under cherry trees in late March or April, when the blossom is at its peak. Friends, families and colleagues spread tarpaulins in parks, bring food and drink, and sit for hours as petals fall. Weather forecasters publish a blossom front each year, and news reports follow its progress from south to north. The custom dates back over a thousand years to the imperial court. The brief life of the blossom stands for the passing of time, a theme of Japanese poetry. Korea and China have similar spring flower festivals.
