Hula
The Hawaiian dance that tells stories with hand movements, chant and song.
Also: hula kahiko
Hula is the traditional dance of Hawaii, in which the dancers tell stories of gods, nature, history and love through movements of hands, hips and feet, accompanied by chants, oli, and drums. The older style, hula kahiko, is accompanied by chant and percussion and is solemn, while the later hula auana uses guitar and ukulele and is graceful and modern. Dancers train with a teacher, kumu hula, in a school called halau, and the discipline includes protocols of respect for the dances and plants. The Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo is the world's most famous hula competition. Hula is a living part of Hawaiian identity.
