Hygge

The Danish and Norwegian idea of cosy, relaxed togetherness.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Hygge.

Also: hyggelig

Hygge is a Danish word for a mood of warmth, comfort and closeness, found in candlelight, a hot drink, soft blankets and good company. It cannot be bought; it is created by friends or family sharing a meal or a quiet evening, with no hurry and little fuss. It is practised most in winter, when the dark days make people gather indoors. Candle use per person in Denmark is among the highest in the world. The word has crossed into English and has been used to sell products, but for Danes it is simply the way of making an evening good. A similar word, koselig, is used in Norway.
