Fika

The Swedish coffee break with something sweet, shared with others.

Also: fika break

Fika is the Swedish custom of taking a break for coffee, usually with a cinnamon bun, cake or biscuit, and sharing it with colleagues, friends or family. It happens at work in the morning and afternoon, at home with visitors and in cafes, and is a central part of social life. The word comes from a reversal of the syllables of kaffe. It is a pause for conversation, with phones put away, rather than a snack. Many Swedish companies arrange a daily fika as part of their culture, and the practice is exported through cafes around the world.
