Ihram
The state of ritual purity and the plain white garments worn by pilgrims on hajj.
Also: ehram
Ihram is both a state and the clothing of a Muslim pilgrim on hajj or umrah. Men wear two unsewn white cloths, one wrapped round the waist and one over the shoulder, while women wear plain modest dress with the face uncovered. The clothing removes marks of wealth and rank, so that all stand equal before God. In the state of ihram, pilgrims avoid perfume, cutting hair or nails, hunting and quarrels. The intention is made at a set point on the route to Mecca. Many people also wear the ihram cloths as their burial shroud later in life.
