Eid
The two great Muslim festivals: the end of Ramadan and the feast of sacrifice.
Also: eid al-fitr, eid al-adha, id
Eid means festival. Eid al-Fitr ends Ramadan, with a special prayer in the morning, new clothes, sweets, gifts to children and visits to relatives. Eid al-Adha, some two months later, recalls the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, and families who can afford it sacrifice a sheep or goat, sharing the meat with relatives and the poor. Both days begin with a bath, perfume and a congregational prayer in the open or at a mosque. Greetings of Eid Mubarak are exchanged. Each country has its own dishes, from sheer khurma in South Asia to ma'amoul in the Levant.
