Jesa is the Korean Confucian rite honouring the ancestors, held on the anniversary of a death and at Seollal and Chuseok. The family sets a table with rice, soup, fruit, rice cakes, meat and fish arranged in a fixed order, and bows in front of a memorial tablet or photo. The eldest son traditionally leads. Afterwards, the food is shared by the family, in an act called eumbok. Practice has changed in recent decades, with simpler tables, shared duties between sons and daughters, and in some families a shift to a meal at a restaurant. The core of it is the gathering of the family.
