Doljabi

The first-birthday game in which a Korean baby picks an object that foretells the future.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Doljabi.

Also: dol, doljanchi

Dol is the first birthday of a Korean child, once a major celebration because many children did not survive infancy. The baby is dressed in hanbok and seated at a table of rice cakes, fruit and objects. In the doljabi the child chooses one object: a pencil for a scholar, thread for long life, money for wealth, a stethoscope or microphone for modern careers. Guests give gold rings or money. The rice cakes, such as baekseolgi, are shared with neighbours to give the baby a share of their good fortune. The party is often held in a hall with many relatives.

Region: East Asia
