Kebaya
The fitted blouse-dress of Indonesia and Malaysia, often lace or embroidered.
Also: baju kebaya
The kebaya is a fitted, long-sleeved blouse or jacket, worn with a batik sarong by women in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand. It is made of cotton, silk, brocade or sheer lace with embroidery, and fastened with brooches called kerongsang. Styles vary: Javanese kebaya kutubaru, Peranakan nyonya kebaya with fine embroidery, and the Balinese kebaya worn to the temple. It is worn at weddings, graduations and official events, and has become a national dress. In 2024, UNESCO inscribed the kebaya as a joint heritage of five countries. Young designers are bringing it back to everyday wear.
