Kiddush

The blessing over wine that sanctifies Shabbat and festivals.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Kiddush.

Also: qiddush

Kiddush, meaning sanctification, is the blessing said over a cup of wine or grape juice at the start of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, to mark the day as holy. It is said at the table on Friday night, and again at midday on Saturday, after morning prayers. The wine cup is held in the hand, often a silver goblet, and the family listens and answers amen. In many synagogues, a small kiddush gathering follows the service, with wine, cake and herring, and it is often paid for by someone marking a birth or anniversary. Children are given a sip.
