Also: sabbath, shabbos

Shabbat is the weekly day of rest in Judaism, lasting from sunset on Friday to nightfall on Saturday. It begins with the lighting of two candles, a blessing over wine, called kiddush, and over two loaves of challah, and a family meal. On Saturday, observant families go to the synagogue, avoid work, driving and cooking, and rest, read and walk. The day ends with havdalah, a ceremony with a braided candle, wine and spices. Shabbat is regarded as a gift of rest, and the phrase Shabbat shalom is used as a greeting. In Israel, much of public life pauses.
