Mangalsutra

The sacred necklace a Hindu groom ties on the bride at the wedding.

Also: thali, tali

The mangalsutra is a necklace of black beads strung on a gold chain or thread, tied around the bride's neck by the groom during the wedding. It means auspicious thread, and it marks a woman as married, in the same way as sindoor and toe rings. In south India the equivalent is called thali or tali, and its design differs by community, with a small pendant that may show a deity or a family emblem. Many women wear it daily for life, and modern versions in lighter gold are made for work and travel.

Region: South Asia
