Saptapadi

The seven steps the Hindu couple take around the sacred fire at the heart of the wedding.

Also: seven steps

Saptapadi, meaning seven steps, is the central rite of a Hindu wedding, in which the couple walk seven times around the sacred fire while a priest recites vows. Each step stands for a promise: nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, children, long life and lasting friendship. The marriage is held to be binding once the seventh step is taken. In some communities the bride and groom have their garments knotted together as they walk, and rice or puffed grain is offered to the fire. Witnesses are the fire itself and the family gathered around.
