Mariachi is a Mexican music tradition from the state of Jalisco, played by a band of violins, trumpets, guitars, a vihuela and a guitarron, with singers in the charro suit of short jacket and trousers with silver buttons. Mariachis play at weddings, birthdays, baptisms, funerals and in the squares, such as Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City. They serenade with songs of love, land and pride, such as Cielito Lindo, and may be hired for a morning serenade, the mananitas. UNESCO has listed mariachi as intangible cultural heritage. The sound has spread through Latin America and the United States.
