Name day
The feast day of the saint after whom a person is named, celebrated in many European countries.
Also: imieniny, namenstag
A name day is the feast day on the calendar of the saint whose name a person bears, celebrated with greetings, flowers, a cake and a small party. It is important in Greece, Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy and Scandinavia, and in some places counts for more than a birthday. Calendars list the names for each day, and newspapers and radio stations announce them. In Greece, a person called Giorgos or Maria receives visitors without an invitation and offers sweets and drinks. The custom grew from the Christian veneration of saints, and calendars have now been extended to secular names.
