Pandal

A temporary decorated pavilion built for a festival, above all Durga Puja.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Pandal.

Also: marquee

A pandal is a temporary structure of bamboo, cloth and lights, raised in a street or park to house a deity's image during a festival. In Kolkata, the pandals of Durga Puja are famous for their themes, with some made to look like palaces, temples, villages or abstract art, and neighbourhoods compete to be the most inventive. Crowds walk from pandal to pandal in the evenings in what is called pandal hopping. The same word is used for Ganesh Chaturthi pavilions in Mumbai. After the festival, the pandal is taken down and the image immersed in the river.
