Sangeet
A pre-wedding evening of song and dance by the two families.
Also: sangit
Sangeet, meaning music, is an evening of song and dance held before an Indian wedding, in which the two families perform for each other. Women sing traditional folk songs, often teasing the groom's side, and today many relatives present choreographed numbers rehearsed for weeks. The mood is playful, with a dance floor, food and drink. In Punjab the matching event is the jaggo, a night procession with lit pots, while in Gujarat the garba and dandiya fill the same space. The sangeet lets the families get to know each other before the formal rites.
