Baraat
The groom's wedding procession, with drums, dancing and often a white horse.
Also: barat, wedding procession
The baraat is the groom's wedding procession, in which his family and friends travel to the wedding venue with music. A band plays, relatives dance in the street, and the groom rides a decorated white mare or an elephant, in his sherwani and turban. When the party reaches the bride's family, they are welcomed with garlands and a rite called milni, in which the fathers and uncles of each side meet. In Pakistan and Bangladesh the barat is much the same. Modern baraats may use cars, open trucks or a dancing crowd on foot, and the noise and joy are the point.
