Ubuntu
A Southern African idea that a person is a person through other people.
Also: umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu
Ubuntu is a Nguni word and philosophy that says a person's humanity is bound up with that of others: I am because we are. It shapes ideas of hospitality, mutual help and forgiveness in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Neighbours share food and work, strangers are welcomed, and disputes are resolved in ways that restore relationships. Archbishop Desmond Tutu spoke of ubuntu in the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The word has been used in the name of software and projects worldwide, and in daily life it is the idea behind a village meeting, a funeral gathering or a shared pot.
