Vesak lantern
Illuminated lanterns and frames hung for the Buddhist festival of Vesak in Sri Lanka.
Also: wesak lantern, toran
At Vesak, the full moon festival that marks the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha, Sri Lankan towns hang lanterns of paper and bamboo, some as simple stars and others tall frames. Large pandals illustrate Jataka tales with lights and moving figures, and dansal, free food stalls, offer tea, rice and sweets to all passers-by. People dress in white, visit temples and keep the precepts. Lantern making is a family craft, and the lights are meant to honour the Buddha's teaching. The festival lasts several days and the lights shine at night across the island.
