Walima
The wedding banquet given by the groom's family after a Muslim marriage.
Also: valima
The walima is the feast held by the groom after the nikah, in which relatives, friends and neighbours, rich and poor, are invited to share a meal and celebrate. The Prophet encouraged it as a way of announcing the marriage and giving thanks. In South Asia it is a large banquet with biryani, korma and sweets, and the bride and groom sit on a stage to receive guests. In the Arab world and Turkey, the dishes and customs differ, and in Southeast Asia it is a village celebration. The point is open hospitality, and generosity is regarded as the sign of a good start.
