The nikah is the legal and religious contract of marriage in Islam. It is made between the bride and groom, usually through their guardians, with two witnesses, and includes a mahr, a gift from the groom to the bride, which she keeps. An imam or officiant gives a short sermon, and the couple say that they accept. The nikah can take place at home, in a mosque or in a hall, and is followed by a celebration, often called walima, hosted by the groom's family.
