About Anzac Day
Anzac Day, 25 April, commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli in 1915, and honours all who have served and died in war and peacekeeping. The day starts with a dawn service, at the time of the landing, in the dark at memorials in every town, with a vigil, the reading of the Ode of Remembrance, the sounding of the Last Post and a minute of silence, then the reveille. Later in the morning, veterans and descendants march, wearing medals, and families come to watch. Rosemary is worn for remembrance and wreaths are laid. Afterwards people share Anzac biscuits, made with oats and golden syrup, and veterans gather for a game of two-up in some pubs, which is legal only on this day.
