About Homowo

Homowo, "hooting at hunger", is the harvest festival of the Ga people of Accra, who tell that their ancestors survived a famine, and then, when their crops finally came in, mocked the hunger. The festival starts in May with the planting and a ban on drumming and noise in the city, which is lifted in August, when the harvest is celebrated. On the main day, families cook kpokpoi or kpekple, steamed corn dough with palm nut soup and fish, and sprinkle the first portions on the ground, in memory of the ancestors, before eating. Chiefs and priests in their regalia process and are carried through the streets in palanquins, to the sound of drums, and neighbourhood gatherings and dances follow. The date varies by town and year, so the dates are approximate.
