About Lohri
Lohri is celebrated on the evening before Makar Sankranti and marks the passing of the coldest part of winter. Families and neighbours gather around a bonfire in an open space and throw in sesame seeds, jaggery, popcorn and peanuts while singing folk songs. Children go door to door singing for Lohri treats, and the song of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary Punjabi figure who protected village girls, is sung. Dancing in the form of bhangra and gidda follows. Homes where a baby boy was born or a wedding has taken place in the past year host the biggest Lohri. Sarson ka saag with makki di roti is a common meal.
