About Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest began in 1810 as the public wedding party of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese, and has been held each year since on the Theresienwiese in Munich. It runs for sixteen to eighteen days from mid-September to the first Sunday of October. On the first day, a parade of brewery wagons drawn by decorated horses and bands in costume makes its way to the grounds. At noon the mayor taps the first keg with the words "O'zapft is!". Only beer from the Munich breweries is served, in one-litre mugs, the Maß, in the large tents, with oompah bands. Many visitors wear Tracht, dirndl and lederhosen. The usual food is roast chicken, Hendl, pretzels, sausages and giant pretzels. Smaller Oktoberfests are held around the world.
