About Thaipusam
Thaipusam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai under the Pusam star, in honour of Murugan, the god of war and wisdom, who received a spear from his mother Parvati. Devotees prepare for weeks with prayers, vegetarian food and abstinence. On the day they carry offerings, usually pots of milk, or kavadi, ornate frames of peacock feathers, sometimes held in place with skewers, in processions to the temple. Over a million people attend at the Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur, where devotees climb 272 steps to the hilltop shrine. The festival is also an important day for Tamil communities in Singapore, Penang, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.
