About Thingyan
Thingyan is Myanmar's new year festival and, with Songkran next door, a water festival. It lasts four or five days from about 13 April, and is thought to mark the descent of the king of the gods, Thagyamin, to earth. Neighbourhoods erect temporary stages, mandats, along the roads, from which people pour water on passersby, dance and sing. In the traditional form the water cleans away the sins of the old year. People also visit monasteries, release fish and birds, wash images of the Buddha and the hair of the elders, and give food to monks. Thabyay flowers, a yellow jasmine-like flower, are worn in the hair, and sweet rice, mont lone yay baw, is eaten.
