About Vasant Panchami
Vasant Panchami opens the spring season on the fifth day of the bright half of Magha, and is the day to worship Saraswati, goddess of learning, music and the arts. People wear yellow, the colour of mustard flowers in bloom, and schools, colleges and homes set up her image with books, pens and instruments laid before her for blessing. In Bengal and Odisha the day is Saraswati Puja, when young children are taught their first letters in a ritual called Hate Khori. In Punjab and Pakistan the day was traditionally marked with kite flying. Sweet saffron rice, called kesari bhat, and yellow sweets are eaten.
