Aqiqah

The Muslim welcome for a newborn, with a sacrifice and the shaving of the head.

Also: akika

Aqiqah is the custom of welcoming a baby into the Muslim community, usually on the seventh day after birth. The baby's head is shaved, and the weight of the hair in silver is given to the poor. One or two animals, sheep or goats, are sacrificed and the meat is cooked and shared with family, neighbours and the needy. The baby is also given a name, and a date may be rubbed on the palate. The aim is thanksgiving to God for the gift of a child. Families who cannot afford it are not obliged, and some give the equivalent amount to charity.
