Bhangra
The vigorous Punjabi dance and music of the harvest and of weddings.
Also: giddha
Bhangra began as a folk dance of Punjab, performed by farmers at the Vaisakhi harvest, to the beat of the dhol drum. Dancers raise their arms, jump and spin, calling out in rhythm with the music, in colourful turbans and kurtas. Women have their own dance, giddha, with clapping and rhymed verses. Bhangra spread to Punjabi weddings and to Britain and Canada, where it became a pop music form in the 1980s and a university dance society fixture. Today it is danced worldwide at weddings and festivals, and by people with no Punjabi roots at all.
