Braai
The South African barbecue, a social occasion around a fire.
Also: braaivleis
A braai is the South African way of grilling meat over wood or charcoal, and also the gathering itself. Boerewors sausage, lamb chops, chicken and steak are cooked, along with pap, a maize porridge, and salads and sauces, while friends talk and drink around the fire. The host, usually a man, tends the coals, and the cooking often takes hours. Heritage Day on 24 September is also called National Braai Day. Almost every community has its version, from township shisa nyama, where meat is bought and grilled at the roadside, to garden braais of the suburbs. It is among the most unifying of national customs.
