Chuppah
The canopy under which a Jewish couple are married.
Also: huppah
The chuppah is the canopy, held on four poles or by four friends, beneath which a Jewish couple stand during the wedding ceremony. It stands for the home they will build together, open on all sides like the tent of Abraham and Sarah, welcoming guests. The canopy may be a prayer shawl, a piece of embroidered cloth or a vine-covered frame, and often it has been made by a family member. Under it, blessings are said, a cup of wine is shared, rings are exchanged and the couple hear the marriage contract, the ketubah, read aloud. The ceremony ends with the groom breaking a glass.
