Shiva
The seven days of mourning observed by Jewish families after a burial.
Also: sitting shiva
Shiva, meaning seven, is the week of mourning after the burial of a close relative in Judaism. The family stays at home, sits on low stools, does not work, and receives visitors who bring food and sit with them. Mirrors are covered, and a candle burns. Prayers are said in the home each day, including the Kaddish. Visitors speak only when the mourners speak, and the usual greeting is wishing them comfort among the mourners of Zion. After shiva, mourning continues in lessening stages over thirty days and a year. The custom gives structure to grief and surrounds mourners with community.
