Zakat
The Muslim duty of annual charity, one of the five pillars.
Also: sadaqah
Zakat is the obligatory giving of a part of one's wealth to the poor and needy, usually 2.5 per cent of savings held over a year. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, and is meant to purify wealth and to ensure that the community cares for its members. Many Muslims give it in Ramadan, when rewards are believed to multiply. Sadaqah is voluntary charity, from a smile to a donation, and zakat al-fitr is a small gift of food or its value paid before Eid. Today, many give through mosques or charities, and some countries collect and distribute it through the state.
