Iftar
The meal that breaks the fast at sunset during Ramadan.
Also: fatoor, ifṭār
Iftar is the meal that ends each day's fast in Ramadan, taken at sunset after the call to prayer. Most Muslims begin with a date and a sip of water, following the practice of the Prophet, then pray, and then eat a full meal that may include soup, rice, meat, salads and sweets. Families and neighbours often invite each other, mosques serve free iftar meals and communities set up long tables in the street. Customs differ: harira in Morocco, samosas in South Asia, qatayef in Egypt, and ful in Sudan. Iftar is a time of gratitude and generosity, and the table is shared with those in need.
