Harambee
The Kenyan tradition of pulling together to raise funds or finish a job.
Also: pull together
Harambee is a Swahili word meaning let us all pull together. In Kenya it names a tradition of communal fund-raising and self-help, in which neighbours and relatives gather to contribute money, labour or goods for a school, a clinic, a funeral or a wedding. It was adopted as a national motto by Jomo Kenyatta at independence in 1963, and appears on the coat of arms. A harambee meeting often has speeches, songs and a collection, and the sums raised are announced. The practice has built thousands of schools and health centres, and reflects the broader African idea of shared responsibility.
