The qipao, also known as the cheongsam, is a one-piece dress with a high mandarin collar, diagonal fastening and side slits, traditionally made of silk. It developed in Shanghai in the 1920s from the long robes of Manchu women and became the fashion of the city, then spread to Hong Kong, where it is still tailored for weddings and formal events. Red qipao are worn by brides and at the Lunar New Year. Today, it is the uniform of some restaurants, hotels and airlines, and designers continue to reinterpret it. A well-cut qipao is made to measure.
