Sherwani
The long buttoned coat worn by South Asian grooms and at formal occasions.
Also: achkan
The sherwani is a knee-length coat with a high collar and buttons down the front, worn by men in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh for weddings, Eid and formal events. It developed in the courts of the Mughal and Hyderabad nobility, blending Persian and British influences, and is made in silk, brocade or cotton with embroidery. The groom wears it with fitted trousers or churidar, a turban or safa, a stole and mojari shoes. Colours range from ivory and gold to deep maroon, and the accessories include a sword and a garland. A tailor's skill is valued, and families often hand down a sherwani from father to son.
