Sobremesa
The Spanish custom of lingering at the table, talking, after the meal is finished.
Also: after-table
Sobremesa, over the table, is the time after a meal when the family or friends stay at the table, talking, drinking coffee or liqueur and picking at fruit and sweets, with no hurry to leave. It can last an hour or even much longer on a Sunday lunch. The custom is shared in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, and in Italy and Greece similar habits exist. A host who clears the plates too soon appears to be rushing the guests. People say the best talk of the day takes place during the sobremesa, and it is at the heart of Spanish social life, helping to keep family bonds strong.
