Taraweeh
The extra evening prayers of Ramadan, held in congregation at the mosque.
Also: tarawih
Taraweeh are special prayers said after the evening prayer, Isha, during the nights of Ramadan. In many mosques, the imam recites a portion of the Quran each night, so that the whole text is completed by the end of the month, while the congregation stands in rows behind. The prayers are made in sets of two units, with short rests, and may last an hour or more. They are a time of community, and mosques fill up, with crowds spilling into the street. In Mecca and Medina the recitations are broadcast around the world. Many families go together, then share a snack or sweets afterwards.
