About Mawlid
Mawlid al-Nabi, on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, honours the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. Not all Muslims mark it: some regard it as a later development and prefer other ways of remembering him, while many others see it as a loved occasion. Where it is kept, communities gather in mosques, Sufi lodges and homes to recite poems of praise, such as the Burda, and hear the story of his life. In Egypt the streets are lit, with a feast of sweets and dolls of sugar called halawet el-moulid. In Pakistan and India, processions and decorated streets feature, and in Turkey the Mevlid is a recital in verse. In West Africa, the occasion is Gamou or Maouloud, with all-night chants.
