About Syttende Mai
Syttende Mai, 17 May, celebrates the signing of the Norwegian constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. It is unusual among national days, because there is no military parade; the main events are the children's parades, barnetog, in each town and village, in which school bands and hundreds of children, waving flags, march through the streets singing and shouting "Hurra!". Many people wear the bunad, the national costume, with silver brooches and embroidery that differs from valley to valley, and the Norwegian flag is on every house. In Oslo, the royal family waves from the balcony of the palace to the parade. Families have a long breakfast, with champagne and eggs, and eat hot dogs, ice cream, cake and waffles through the day.
