About Victory Day
Victory Day on 9 May marks the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in 1945, and has long been the most solemn holiday in Russia and several former Soviet republics, where tens of millions of people died in the war. People gather at war memorials to lay red carnations and wreaths, veterans wear their medals, and families visit graves. Many walk in the Immortal Regiment processions, carrying photographs of relatives who fought, and wear the orange and black ribbon of Saint George. In Moscow, a parade is held in Red Square with a flypast. The date is observed in much of Europe on 8 May, and some countries, including Ukraine, now keep their remembrance on 8 May as well.
