About Walpurgis Night
Walpurgis Night, on the evening of 30 April, is a spring festival of northern and central Europe. Named after the English missionary Saint Walburga, it also keeps older customs of bidding goodbye to winter and warding off evil. In Germany's Harz mountains, the Brocken is said to be the meeting place of witches, and costumed crowds hold a night of fires and mock witches' revels. In Sweden, Valborgsmässoafton is the night of big bonfires, kept at the edges of towns and fields, with speeches, and spring songs sung by male choirs, the most famous in Uppsala and Lund, where students celebrate with a white cap. In the Czech Republic, Pálení čarodějnic burns an effigy of a witch. In many places, a maypole is raised at the end of the night.
