About Baisakhi
Baisakhi, or Vaisakhi, is celebrated in mid-April. For farmers of Punjab it marks the ripening of the wheat harvest, and fairs are held in villages. For Sikhs it is more: on this day in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib. Gurdwaras hold special services, the Guru Granth Sahib is carried through the streets in a nagar kirtan led by five people representing the Panj Pyare, and free meals are served in langar. Cities with large Sikh communities, such as Southall, Surrey and Toronto, hold some of the biggest parades outside Punjab. The same date is the solar new year in several other Indian regions.
