About Sizdah Bedar

Sizdah Bedar, "getting rid of thirteen", is the last day of the Nowruz holiday, on the 13th of Farvardin, around 2 April. Thirteen is considered unlucky, so Iranians leave their homes and spend the whole day outdoors in parks, gardens and by rivers and lakes with picnic baskets of food, sweets and nuts, playing games, sing and dance. The sabzeh, the dish of sprouted wheat or lentils from the haft-sin table, which has absorbed the bad luck of the year, is thrown into running water. Unmarried girls tie blades of the grass in knots to wish for a husband. It is customary to play jokes, and the lies of the thirteenth, dorugh-e sizdah, are an Iranian counterpart of April Fools' Day. Roads and parks are crowded.
