About Parsi New Year
The Parsis of India and Pakistan, whose ancestors came from Persia, celebrate their New Year, Navroze, in August in the Shahenshahi calendar, which has no leap year and so has slipped against the Gregorian one. The day starts with a visit to the fire temple, the agiary, where prayers are said and sandalwood is offered to the flame. Houses are cleaned and decorated with chalk designs and flowers, and people wear new clothes, usually white for the women's saris. The family eats a lunch of fish steamed in a banana leaf with green chutney, patra ni machhi, pulao-dal, and sweet sev and lagan nu custard, with falooda to drink. Friends greet one another with "Sal Mubarak".
